Summer Time

It's almost summer. I picked up a flat of strawberries and cleaned them this morning. They're not as pretty, nor as sweet as last years crop, but will be delicious just the same. I'm going to make some Strawberry Shortcake for dessert.
I had a gorgeous strawberry picture from last year's blog. I lost most of these pictures when my computer crashed, so I thought I would take a look back through the blog for fond summer memories...

This is one of our favorite pictures from the Pittsburgh Zoo. I'm glad I still had this picture on my blog!
Here's the strawberry shortcake recipe.
Getting ready for Mom and Dad's 50th Anniversary party!
Singin' in the Rain - our 20th anniversary with A Prairie Home Companion.
Our wedding photo!?
Cooking over the campfire is one of our favorite things to do in the Summer!
And Now for Something Completely Different has a playlist of marches and music that reminds me of summer concerts in the park.

We've had a tough year since my husband's bicycle accident last summer. Thanks to all the amazingly supportive friends and family that helped us get through. This summer seems to have started off on the right foot. We'll be kicking off summer and celebrating Summerfest next weekend as my daughter prepares for Garrettsville Idol!
Enjoy your summer! (And, if it happens to be coming on Winter where you are, feel free to shop Etsy for some warm goodies!)

Fiber Friday - Crocheting with Unspun Fibers

It's been awhile since I've posted fun with fibers. I had these colorful batts from staring at me for months and I wasn't sure what to do with them. I am not a spinner and haven't even tried a drop spindle. I do want to do some more Nuno felting, but I got the urge to try to crochet with the unspun fibers. This may have been easier with roving or pencil roving. These colors were all mixed together in a gorgeous blend. I just started pulling apart bulky yarn-size pieces and put a crochet hook to it. It can be very delicate and it took me awhile to separate and choose colors. I wasn't even sure what I was making. Once the fibers had been woven or crocheted, it was dangerous to pull them apart. So, on I went until I had used every inch!
I lighted felted it with hot water and soap on a ridged boot mat, rinsed and rolled it in a towel. It's still a bit damp and is slow to dry because of our humid weather. I didn't want to shrink it too much, just tighten up the fibers a little bit. I'm sure it would have gotten a lot smaller and thicker if I had felted it normally, but I wanted it soft and loose.
Now that I've played with it a bit, I've decided it will be a purse. I thought about crocheting a strap for it, or using this fun frame that I have, but I think it looks best as a clutch. A sleek, but sturdy lining will finish up this fun with fibers design.

Yes, Chef!

Sarah had already started with the "I'm bored!" and "What am I going to do this summer?" I thought about some of the things that she likes to do and suggested that she help plan meals and cook once in awhile. She grabbed the latest Rachel Ray cookbook that her grandparents had given her and picked out some recipes to start with. The other night she made prosciutto paninis with roasted peppers and grilled romaine with Caesar dressing. Yum! It was so good. The brownie mess was not her fault. Even I know that brownies don't bake at 425° for 22 minutes. What's up with that Rachel? They were fluffernutter ones that you put peanut butter chips in the mix, bake it, then add mini marshmallows for the last few minutes. I let them bake longer, but they still were a goopy mess in the middle. We ate the edges of course. You would too! Tonight she's making something that her brother will eat. Chicken and penne. I'm going to try this salad recipe from Home Made Originals blog, with broccoli from the garden!
