Apple Pie and Woolly Bears



It's not quite Fall yet, but there's definitely a chill in the air these days!

I made an apple pie. The crust isn't perfect this time, but it doesn't have to be!
Did your grandma make pinwheels too? You take the little bit of left-over crust and roll it out. Spread it with butter and sprinkle with lots of cinnamon sugar. Bake them in a hot oven until they're done. Not too sweet, but a nice little treat. My husband thought the pie was a yummy surprise. The kids even ate a piece!

I saw a fuzzy woolly bear caterpillar yesterday and it reminded me of some brown furry yarn that I had. I made a long scarf with it last year, but had just enough left over to make this fun button scarf. Stay tuned for more signs of Fall!

  9. Gorgeous pie! Apple is one of my favorites, with sharp cheddar cheese. In the last 15 minutes of baking, brush the top with an egg and milk mixture and sprinkle with sugar. It makes it shiny and sparkly and lovely brown and crispity.

  10. Thanks all! Yes Julie - I like to mix a tablespoon of milk in the bowl that I had the apples and cinnamon sugar in, then brush that on the top. Crispy and sweet.

    LOVE your pie and neck scarf/warmer. Does remind me of those caterpillars!

    The only pies I ever made were early on in my first marriage I made pumpkin. Then I thought it was from scratch because I made the crust, but used canned pumpkin.

    Would love to do exactly what you did and I think the crust looks perfect. Very homemade and rustic looking. Exactly how I like things.

    But, I like my hot apple pie with a huge scoop of french vanilla on top. It starts to melt and you get that yummy, gooie ... I have to stop.

  14. Your neck scarf is divine! My mom and grandmom used to make pinwheels with leftover pie crust dough...you brought back some lovely memories of my childhood!

  16. Autumn has been making itself known since the beginning of August here in my little neck of the woods. This is typical. As the golden rod begin to bloom, the evening takes on a special chill that speaks to the coming seasons - despite the intense summer heat of midday. Blankets come out, and apple pie dreams begin . . .

  17. We just did the cinnamon/sugar on strips of dough....the pinwheels are much cuter!
